SMARAN helps identify, promote importance and renovation of the neglected traditional water bodies (tanks / ponds) which supports the Irrigation, Ground water, Cattle, aquatic life etc and land development to control soil erosion & increase/retain moisture in rural areas. The programs are taken up with the coordination of farmers (beneficiaries), Village Panchayath, MRO, concerned Government Departments, Member Environment & Lake protection committee if it’s in HMDA limits and finally the District Collectors concerned.
In urban areas we promote, motivate, create awareness, design suitable Rain water harvesting (RWH) structures for institutions, hospitals, gated communities, apartments, independent houses colonies, Parks/Gardens, etc to increase the ground water levels. The main methodology adopted is called Inverse Borewell (IBW) method and it involves identification of abandoned and working bore holes through which the entire rooftop rain water is allowed to percolate via a silt chamber which joins the deep aquifers resulting in increased ground water deposits. This method increased the life & yield of many existing and surrounding bore wells wherever implemented. The impact at many RWH sites implemented reduced dependence on external water tanker supply; a few became completely ZERO dependent like NIFT campus at Madhapur, Hitech city spread in 10 acres area is one of the RWH project successfully implemented with IBW method in 2011 which used to require 15 water tankers per day earlier now became self reliant with NIL tankers/ zero external dependence saving up to Rs30 Lakhs per annum within two years.
SMARAN is extending RWH technical support to GHMC central zone towards identification for suitable RWH structures in residential welfare associations, apartments, open spaces, public places such as parks and institutions such as schools, hospitals, places of worship, etc. On GHMC request SMARAN implemented a live working model of IBW RWH method in June-2013 in Nature cure hospital, spread in 12 acres of area at Balkampet, Hyderabad which comes under AYUSH Dept. This implementation is working successfully & reduced the requirement of 6 water tankers per day to NIL/ zero till date.
SMARAN started recently working with one of the newly formed Municipalities ie Badangpet Nagarapanchayat (BNP-consisting of 8 villages) in periurban which is one of the 5 surrounding Hyderabad city, with a population of nearly one lakh spread in 24 square kms of area. As a model SMARAN is going to coordinate in providing technical support to BNP with technical experts in the field of RWH, safe drinking water, tanks restoration, storm water, sanitation, open sewage and solid waste management.
